People Of Bermondsey: Meet Entela Shanaj, Sales Manager at Barratt London
We spoke with Entela who shares insights on Bermondsey’s regeneration, the importance of affordable housing, and creating community spaces. She also offers advice for women in property and tells us her go-to Bermondsey spots, from Maltby Street Market to the Beer Mile.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Barratt London?
After realising my bachelor’s degree in applied business computing might not have been for me, I joined Barratt London in 2011 as a Trainee Sales Adviser. After 14 years at Barratt London, I worked my way up to my current role as Sales Manager, where I oversee a team of sales advisers and work closely with agents on all things Bermondsey Heights. My journey has been incredibly rewarding, filled with learning experiences and professional growth. At times I’ve felt out of my depth, however, these were important moments to grow.
What makes Bermondsey Heights special compared to other developments in London?
Bermondsey’s regeneration is in full swing, and further projected investment into the district only backs up its future success. Bermondsey’s local market is buzzing too, with strong buyer interest that comes as no surprise, considering you get all the advantages of Zone 2 living, at an attractive Zone 3 price tag.
How do you see this development contributing to the local community and regeneration of Bermondsey?
Bermondsey Heights is set to play a pivotal role in the transformation of the area. By offering modern, high-quality housing options, including affordable homes under the First Homes Scheme, it addresses the housing needs of a diverse range of residents. This project not only contributes to the regeneration of Bermondsey but also supports its growth as a dynamic and desirable place to live.
Are there any community-driven aspects of the project that you’re particularly excited about?
One of the community-driven aspects I'm particularly excited about at Bermondsey Heights is the inclusion of green spaces, communal gardens and residents’ lounges. These areas will provide residents with a place to relax, socialise, and enjoy nature, fostering a sense of community and wellbeing.
At Barratt London we understand the importance of community engagement when it comes to helping those at the heart of our developments continue to develop and thrive, just like our most recent work with Bede House, a Southwark charity offering a wide range of support to the local community. We helped their Learning Disabilities project with the maintenance and improvement of their nature garden and pond, to create a new and improved functional communal space.
What’s your vision for the future of Bermondsey Heights and the surrounding area?
My vision for Bermondsey Heights is to see it become a vibrant and inclusive community that offers high-quality living spaces and fosters a strong sense of belonging among residents. As part of our commitment to building inclusive, accessible and affordable homes, 20 are wheelchair adaptable, and 32 are discounted through the First Homes Scheme, as part of the wider 253 new homes being delivered.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding thing is helping aspiring buyers by providing solutions and supporting them through their home buying journey, from viewing to completion. I also love coaching my team, it’s so exciting to see them moulding into future-proof sales advisers.
If you could give one piece of advice to women looking to step into the property and development world, what would it be?
My advice to other women looking to step into the property industry would be to believe in yourself and your abilities. Confidence is key in this industry, and your unique perspective can bring valuable insights. Keep going, do your best, and push through to achieve the best outcomes you can.
When you’re not working, what’s your favourite thing to do in Bermondsey?
I love exploring the local markets, especially Maltby Street Market, local breweries along the Bermondsey Beer Mile and strolling through Southwark Park. Funnily enough, when I first started working for Barratt, I used to live in Bermondsey on Galloway Road, so I'm quite familiar with the area!
