Explore the beautiful houses and their history on Grange walk, Bermondsey
Which house would you choose to live in on Grange Walk?
The colourful row of houses, numbers 5 to 11 are rather beautiful and iconic to the Bermondsey area, the row that sits across Tower Bridge road from Bermondsey Square dates from the late seventeenth century and each house is individual and has different coloured paintwork.
The site where Bermondsey Square is today is best known as the site for Bermondsey Abbey, the Abbey was dissolved in 1537 by Henry VIII, and the estate was acquired by Sir Thomas Pope (founder of Trinity College Oxford) who broke up the Abbey buildings and built a mansion for himself.
The gatehouse of the old Abbey remains in situ at number 7 which has two hinges still embedded in the front of the house on which hung the old gate.
Did you know a Sweet Shop used to occupy number 8 Grange Walk? This black and white photograph we discovered was taken between 1905 and 1935.
